The present disclosure generally relates to an internal com bustion engine lubricating oil composition comprising: (a) a major amount of a base oil of lubricating viscosity; (b) a nitrogen - containing dispersant; (c) an alkaline earth metal containing detergent; (d) a compound comprising the reaction product of: (i) a nitrogen - containing reactant, wherein the nitrogen-containing reactant comprises an alkyl alkano lamide, an alkyl alkoxylated alkanolamide, an alkyl alkanolamine, an alkyl alkoxylated alkanolamine or mixtures thereof, (ii) a source of boron, and (iii) a hydrocarbyl polyol, having at least three hydroxyl groups. Methods are provided for lubricating oxygenated diamond like carbon surfaces to reduce friction while reducing or minimizing wear on the surface. A diamond-like carbon surface layer having a surface ratio of oxygen to carbon of 1:15 or more can be lubricated using a lubricant oil that includes a molybdenum- based friction modifier additive, a tungsten-based friction modifier additive, or a combination thereof. The Mo-based friction modifier (and/or other friction modifier based on a Group VI metal) can be selected based on the Gibbs free energy of adsorption (AG) for the friction modifier on an oxygenated diamond-like carbon surface. Use of a Group VI metal-based friction modifier having a AG of adsorption with a sufficiently large magnitude can reduce friction at the surface of the oxygenated diamond-like carbon while causing a reduced or minimized amount of wear during lubrication.

The disclosed technology relates to zinc-free lubricants for internal combustion engines, which contain metal-free additives to provide cleanliness to the lubricant as well as zinc-free phosphorus anti-wear additives. Lubrication of internal combustion engines has been a practice for many decades, yet continual improvement in lubricant technology is ongoing as new engines and new standards have been developed. Formulations directed to spark ignition engines and compression ignition engines, for instance, must address limits placed on sulfated ash, phosphorus, and sulfur content (“SAPS”), and restrictions in these components often lead to upper limits on the amount of metal-containing additives that can be included in the lubricant. Reduction in metal containing additives is necessary to reduce the impact of metal ash on exhaust aftertreatment devices and to reduce the emission of particulate matter. Chief among these metal-containing additives are zinc dialkyldithiophosphates (ZDDP) for wear and oxidation protection and overbased metal detergents for cleanliness and acid control. ZDDP has been the industry standard for reducing valve train wear, protecting against liner wear, and reducing oxidation leading to corrosive wear. However the zinc contributes to an increase in sulfated ash in the lubricating oil and the phosphorus causes inactivation of oxidation catalysts used in exhaust after-treatment devices.

A functionalized polymer for use in a lubricant composition. The functionalized polymer includes a reaction product of a hydrocarbon polymer grafted with an acylating agent that is reacted with both: i) a hydrocarbyl substituted poly(oxyalkylene) amine and/or a poly(oxyalkylene) alcohol and ii) a polyamine. Also disclosed are a lubricating composition containing the functionalized polymer and a method of lubricating and operating an engine employing the lubricating composition that contains the functionalized polymer. The functionalized polymers may be used as viscosity modifiers and/or to provide lubricating oils have a set of properties that lead to a higher predicted fuel economy.

A lubricant composition includes a base oil, an alkoxylated amide, an ester, and an anti-wear agent including phosphorus. The alkoxylated amide and ester have general formulas (I) and (II), respectively. The lubricant composition may be further defined as a racing oil composition. Also disclosed is a method for maximizing the effectiveness of a friction modifier in a racing oil composition thus increasing the fuel economy of a racing vehicle. The method includes providing the racing oil composition and lubricating an internal combustion engine of a racing vehicle to increase the fuel economy of the racing vehicle.
